“WaterAid Nigeria and DP World Partner to Transform Public Health in Bauchi State”
WaterAid Nigeria, supported by DP World, is launching a project in Bauchi State to improve public health outcomes through sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives. The project aims to benefit over 15,000 people, with a focus on women and girls who often bear the burden of accessing these essential services.
Key interventions include the construction of solar-powered boreholes and sanitation facilities, training artisans on water facility maintenance, and capacity building of WASH committees in communities. Additionally, WaterAid will implement hygiene behavior change interventions to promote practices like handwashing and toilet usage, complementing water service delivery.
Bauchi State, with a population of about 6.5 million, faces challenges in water and hygiene services, with only 18% having access to basic services and 21% practicing open defecation. Water consumption is often contaminated with e-coli, highlighting the urgent need for clean water access.
Evelyn Mere, Country Director of WaterAid Nigeria, emphasized the importance of clean water, toilets, and hygiene in transforming lives, especially for women and girls. Through DP World’s funding, the project aims to reach 20,000 more people with essential services and empower women, girls, and youths in project areas.
WaterAid has been supporting Bauchi communities for almost two decades, but gaps in access to safe water and sanitation still exist, putting the population at risk of public health emergencies. DP World’s commitment to invest in Nigeria reflects their dedication to global supply chain solutions and supporting communities in need.
