Valencia Port Booms: 10% Traffic Surge in 2024
Valenciaport has seen a significant increase in container traffic in the first two months of the year, handling a total of 784,095 containers, marking a growth of +9.97% compared to the same period in 2023.
The Port of Valencia, a major hub in the Mediterranean, experienced a rise in container traffic according to data from the Port Authority of València. The volume of containers entering and leaving Valencian terminals grew by 9.97%, totaling 784,095 TEUs. Both full and empty container traffic saw increases of 7.17% and 20.31% respectively, while the overall weight of goods passing through the terminals increased by 6.33%.
Various sectors showed growth in traffic at Valenciaport in 2024, including iron and steel, non-metallic minerals, fertilisers, chemicals, agri-foodstuffs, and vehicles and transport. However, there were declines in the energy sector and construction materials traffic. Additionally, passenger numbers increased by 31.76%, with a significant portion traveling to the Balearic Islands and Algeria. Vehicle traffic decreased, but rail transport, ro-ro traffic, and ITUs all saw increases.
Trade with China saw a substantial growth of 30% in 2024, with the Far East area contributing significantly to the increase in TEUs handled. China remains Valenciaport’s main trading partner, while countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Greece have experienced significant growth in traffic with Valenciaport, largely due to transshipment activities originating from Asia.
