Qatar Airways expands live animal transport with world’s largest facility
Qatar Airways Cargo (QR) has invested heavily in a new live animal transport center that has significantly increased its handling capabilities, enabling them to handle 150,000 more animals a year. This investment comes as the animal transportation market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.07% from 2023 to 2028, with livestock and pets making up a significant portion of the market. Additionally, the global horse racing market is projected to double in size by 2030, creating a demand for high-margin transport services.
QR’s new animal facility is the largest in the world, covering 5,260 square meters and capable of handling 550,000 live animal shipments annually. The facility includes amenities such as 140 dog kennels, 40 cat kennels, and 24 stables across four zones. QR’s Chief Cargo Officer, Mark Drusch, emphasized the carrier’s commitment to animal welfare and quality care during transit.
Despite not disclosing the exact amount spent on the new facility, QR has seen an increase in interest from live animal shippers, particularly for horses and day-old chicks. Mr. Drusch emphasized the importance of providing a comfortable and safe environment for the animals during transit. QR has also implemented digitalization initiatives to improve efficiency and compliance with live animal regulations.
QR was the first airline to receive the Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) live animals certification and continues to prioritize the well-being of the animals in its care. The facility officially began live animal handling operations on March 12th, offering improved facilities and amenities for the safe transportation of animals.
