“Port of Long Beach awarded $2.6M for enhanced security”
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the Port of Long Beach over $2.6 million to enhance security measures and ensure the smooth flow of trade at the nation’s second busiest seaport. Long Beach, a major recipient of funds from the agency’s Port Security Grant Program, intends to focus on strengthening cybersecurity, improving drone detection capabilities, and upgrading network infrastructure to support efficient cargo movement. The port experienced record container traffic in September and the third quarter. Additionally, Homeland Security allocated $4.2 million to six terminals, the Long Beach Police Department’s Port Police Division, and the Long Beach Fire Department.
Port of Long Beach Chief Executive Mario Cordero expressed gratitude to the Department of Homeland Security for promoting innovative security practices that safeguard the port’s infrastructure and the people involved in handling cargo worth over $200 billion annually. The grant aims to enhance existing security systems and boost operational resilience during emergencies. Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal highlighted the significance of the grant in protecting the livelihoods of over 2.6 million individuals reliant on port operations and strengthening the trans-Pacific trade gateway.
