“Port of Gothenburg Implements Digital Port Call for Efficient Vessel Arrival Process”

A new digitalization initiative is underway at the Port of Gothenburg, with the launch of the “Digital Port Call” platform. This platform is set to revolutionize the vessel arrival process at the largest port in Scandinavia, handling around 6000 ship calls annually.

The platform aims to streamline communication and coordination between the various actors involved in the port operations, including shipping companies, terminals, tugboats, pilots, boatmen, and traffic planners. Fredrik Rauer, Manager Port Control at the Gothenburg Port Authority, highlights the importance of synchronizing information flow among up to 120 different stakeholders from the vessel’s departure to its berthing at the port.

One key feature of the Digital Port Call platform is its ability to provide a common situational awareness through data-driven decision support, leading to enhanced predictability and more efficient resource planning. It also allows for Just-In-Time arrivals, where vessels receive a “digital queue ticket” in advance to optimize their speed and slot time upon reaching the port, resulting in eco-friendly and cost-effective operations.

Inter Terminals, a terminal company in the Port of Gothenburg Energy Port, has been actively involved in the platform’s development and launch. Thomas Andersson, Manager Logistics Services at Inter Terminals, emphasizes the value of digitalization in improving information flow and reducing fuel consumption for both the company and its customers.

The Port of Gothenburg anticipates a significant reduction in CO2 emissions – around 6000 tons per year – within the port area, thanks to the efficiency gains facilitated by the Digital Port Call platform. Gabriella Ståhle, Production Planner in the Energy Port at the Port of Gothenburg AB, points out that these emission reductions extend beyond the port area, especially with the adoption of slow steaming practices by vessels arriving from previous ports. Overall, the platform benefits all stakeholders by optimizing resource utilization and facilitating smoother port operations.
