“Lufthansa Cargo’s Future-Proofing Strategies Under New CEO: Sustainable Solutions & Digital Focus”

Lufthansa Cargo is embarking on a new journey under the leadership of Dorothea von Boxberg, who took on the role of chief executive in March. Von Boxberg has wasted no time in focusing on the future of the airline, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and digitalization.

Taking the reins from Peter Gerber, who had served the company for nearly three decades, von Boxberg has outlined her vision for Lufthansa Cargo. She aims to enhance customer experience, drive innovation in airfreight, and offer more sustainable solutions. Additionally, she is keen on exploring ways to make the company an attractive employer and foster collaboration among staff and colleagues.

Sustainability has become a top priority for Lufthansa Cargo, with von Boxberg highlighting the need to reduce the airline’s carbon footprint. Initiatives such as the AeroShark film, developed in collaboration with Lufthansa Technik and BASF, are set to improve fuel efficiency by making aircraft more aerodynamic. Other initiatives focus on reducing weight and optimizing fuel consumption through efficient planning.

While von Boxberg acknowledges the limitations of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in large quantities, she is hopeful that ongoing efforts and partnerships will pave the way for a greener future in air cargo. Lufthansa Cargo’s collaboration with DB Schenker on CO2-neutral freighter flights using SAF is a step in the right direction.

Amid challenges brought about by the pandemic, Lufthansa Cargo is navigating the recovery of bellyhold cargo capacity as passenger services resume. Von Boxberg remains optimistic about the airline’s growth trajectory, emphasizing the importance of flexibility and understanding during this period of transition.

Digitalization is another key focus area for Lufthansa Cargo, with von Boxberg noting that the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital solutions. The airline is investing in improving its digital interfaces to provide customers with seamless and convenient access to information.

As Lufthansa Cargo charts its course towards a sustainable and digitally-driven future, von Boxberg’s leadership promises a strategic and forward-thinking approach to future-proofing the business.
