Liege Airport’s Freight Traffic Soars by 16% in March
In March 2024, Liege Airport saw a significant increase in cargo tonnage, with a 16% rise compared to March 2023. The number of cargo aircraft movements also went up by 8% during this month. Freight traffic experienced a 16% increase, totaling 104,080 tons in March 2024. This growth surpasses the global demand trend of 11%, as reported by Xeneta.
The surge in cargo volumes was attributed to factors such as the booming e-commerce industry and challenges faced by maritime transport, leading to a shift towards airfreight. Liege Airport’s operations have evolved, with a decrease in night flights by 12% and a 26% increase in daytime movements in March 2024. Additionally, there has been a reduction in flights operated by less environmentally friendly aircraft models like the B747-400F and 747-200F.
Laurent Jossart, the CEO of Liege Airport, expressed satisfaction with the growth in volumes at the airport’s logistics and multimodal hub. The airport achieved a new record for weekly volumes in week 13 of the year, indicating a positive outlook for the future and validating their Masterplan 2023-2040.
