Houston Logistics Operation Closes, Dozens Laid Off
WWL Vehicle Services Americas, a subsidiary of global shipping and logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen, is permanently closing its Houston logistics operation, resulting in the layoff of dozens of employees. The closure, scheduled to begin on March 14 and be completed by March 31, is part of a move to cease all operations at the facility located at 131 East Loop North. According to Julian N. Krol, legal counsel for Wallenius Wilhelmsen group of companies, the layoffs and facility closure are expected to be permanent. However, employees have the option to relocate to the company’s new worksite facility in Freeport, Texas.
In related news, Volkswagen Group of America, the former tenant at the Houston location, announced that Port Freeport will serve as its new hub for importing and delivering vehicles to dealers across the United States. Freeport is situated about 60 miles southeast of Houston along the Texas Gulf Coast.
In other transportation news, Canadian authorities have suspended two trucking companies following crashes, Mexico remains the top US trade partner in November, with Laredo being the number one gateway, and GXO is set to shut down its Memphis facility, resulting in the layoff of 211 workers.
