“Hong Kong Air Cargo Launches Green Terminal Pact”

PRESS RELEASE

(Hong Kong, 20 March 2024) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), the largest independent handler in Hong Kong, is taking steps towards achieving net zero by launching a voluntary Green Terminal Pact (GTP) at SuperTerminal 1. The initiative aims to engage tenants in reducing their carbon footprint and creating an environmentally-conscious workplace.

The GTP aims to help Hactl and its tenants reduce energy consumption and prepare for Hong Kong’s Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme by providing a system of quantitative measurements. Smart meters have been installed in participating tenants’ offices to track energy consumption, and briefings on the waste charging scheme have been organized. Hactl has also installed recycling machines and will collect waste for recycling to help tenants better manage and reduce their waste.

A key feature of the GTP is a Performance Reward Scheme, where participating tenants set targets for reduced energy consumption, waste, and increased recycling. Successful achievement of targets will earn them trophies and vouchers that can be used to buy goods from local social enterprises. Hactl is the first member of the Hong Kong International Airport business community to launch such a sustainability-themed engagement program.

The GTP is voluntary, and over 70% of SuperTerminal 1’s rented office space tenants have already committed to signing the Pact. The initiative was officially launched on 20th March at SuperTerminal 1, with a ceremony to kick off the initiative followed by the first of a series of quarterly sustainability events for tenants.

Hactl Chief Executive, Wilson Kwong, expressed pride in launching the initiative and thanked tenants for their positive response to the Green Terminal Pact, which aims to make Hong Kong International Airport a leader in aviation industry sustainability. The launch of the GTP follows the establishment of Hactl’s Green Terminal program in 2018, with the goal of creating the world’s greenest air cargo handling operation. Annual Green Weeks have reinforced sustainability messages to all staff and encouraged their active participation in implementing changes to their behavior and lifestyle. The most recent Green Week also saw tenants actively participating and contributed to the establishment of the GTP.
