HGK and ADM Partner to Build Next-Gen Eco Vessel
HGK Dry Shipping is currently in the process of building a state-of-the-art inland waterway vessel for Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM), a leading US commodities trading corporation. The charter agreement between the two companies was signed during the recent Transport Logistic trade fair in Munich.
The new vessel is designed to operate in shallow waters using a diesel-electric propulsion system and solar panels, marking a significant advancement in dry cargo shipping on European waterways. This initiative is part of HGK Shipping’s strategic plan to introduce innovative and sustainable inland waterway shipping solutions, expanding their services from tanker shipping to the bulk commodity sector.
The environmentally friendly diesel-electric drive system of the vessel is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 30% compared to current standards. Additionally, the integrated solar panels can generate up to 90 MWh of electricity, potentially lowering CO2 emissions by an additional 70t per year. The vessel is also designed to be adaptable to future fuel technologies such as hydrogen.
The optimization of the vessel for shallow waters is crucial for ADM’s transportation routes to Germany, ensuring reliable goods movement on the river Rhine even during periods of low water levels. ADM’s commitment to sustainability is highlighted by their decision to charter the new diesel-electric barge as part of their ongoing efforts to promote eco-friendly practices in their supply chain.
Steffen Bauer, CEO of HGK Shipping, emphasized the vessel’s significance in transporting dry bulk commodities efficiently and sustainably. The vessel’s design process involves collaboration between experts from HGK Shipping and ADM to meet environmental and industry standards for decarbonization and reliable supplies.
Overall, the partnership between HGK Dry Shipping and ADM represents a significant step toward advancing sustainable shipping practices and ensuring reliable cargo transportation in the European market.
