Hactl to Introduce Autonomous Electric Tractors for Ramp Operations
Hong Kong cargo handler Hactl is planning to introduce Autonomous Electric Tractors (AETs) to its ramp operations later this year in response to ongoing recruitment challenges. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Westwell Holdings to collaborate on implementing these vehicles.
In addition to towing dollies, the AETs will be able to automatically couple, uncouple, and adjust to different specifications. Once testing and final on-site tuning are completed, the AETs will be gradually integrated into Hactl’s current fleet of driver-controlled tractors. Initially, the AETs will be used to tow loaded import ULDs on a 1 km route between outdoor ULD staging areas and the main terminal ULD system intake deck at SuperTerminal 1.
According to Hactl chief executive Wilson Kwong, the deployment of AETs is a response to the challenges of recruiting workers for airport-related tasks, particularly airside work. Kwong explained that the company aims to use its available workforce as efficiently as possible and deploy them to tasks that make the best use of their skills and abilities. The introduction of AETs will allow Hactl to explore additional applications for this technology in order to improve productivity, free up staff for more demanding tasks, and reduce environmental impact.
The AETs have a range of up to 75 km per charge and will contribute significantly to Hactl’s carbon reduction efforts. Safety is a top priority in operating these new vehicles, with each AET equipped with advanced technology such as a highly-accurate GNSS system, multiple HD cameras, and LiDAR sensors to detect objects and prevent collisions. Operational speeds will be limited to eight kmph to enhance safety measures.
