“Hactl Introduces Autonomous Electric Tractors for Cargo Handling”

PRESS RELEASE

(Hong Kong, 3 April 2024) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) – the largest independent cargo handler in Hong Kong – is making progress on its plan to implement Autonomous Electric Tractors (AETs) in its ramp operations in 2024.

Hactl has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Westwell Holdings (Hong Kong) Ltd. (Westwell) to collaborate on the introduction of these vehicles. The goal is to develop autonomous vehicles that can not only tow cargo dollies but also automatically connect and disconnect them and adjust to their different specifications.

Once testing and final adjustments are completed, the AETs will be integrated into Hactl’s existing tractor fleet. Initially, they will tow loaded import ULDs on a 1km route between the outdoor ULD staging area and the main terminal ULD system intake deck of SuperTerminal 1. Eventually, the AETs will be used on longer and more complex routes.

Safety is a top priority in operating these new vehicles. Each AET is equipped with a highly accurate GNSS system, multiple HD cameras, and LiDAR sensors to detect objects and avoid collisions. While the AETs have similar capabilities to the current diesel-powered tractors, their operational speeds will be limited to 8kph for added safety.

With a range of up to 75km per charge, the electric-powered AETs will also contribute significantly to Hactl’s carbon reduction efforts.

The main reason behind Hactl’s move to autonomous vehicles is the challenge of recruiting qualified personnel, especially for airport-related and airside work. By utilizing autonomous technology for towing tractors, Hactl aims to make the most efficient use of its workforce and deploy them to tasks that best utilize their skills and experience, all while maintaining safety standards.

Chairman of Westwell, Kenny Tan, mentions that handling facilities are critical in the logistics chain and that Westwell will employ the latest AI technology and clean energy to help Hactl build a fully automated cargo terminal that is green, intelligent, and efficient.

The deployment of AETs is just the beginning for Hactl in terms of using autonomous vehicles in its operations. The company is exploring additional applications for this technology with the aim of further improving productivity, freeing up staff for more demanding tasks, and continuing to reduce environmental impact.
