“Georgia Allocates $6M for Port of Brunswick Upgrades”

Georgia lawmakers have approved over $6 million for harbor improvements at the Port of Brunswick following recommendations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Governor Brian Kemp signed the funding into law on Feb. 29 as part of the state’s midyear budget adjustment. The funding will be used for a bend widener, expansion of the turning basin, and an expanded meeting area at St. Simons Sound, which is home to one of the nation’s largest auto import facilities.

In 2023, the Port of Brunswick set a record by handling 775,565 units of autos and machinery, marking a 15.6% increase from the previous year. Georgia Ports Authority CEO Griff Lynch expressed optimism about Brunswick becoming the busiest gateway for roll-on/roll-off cargo in the nation.

The project is estimated to cost around $17.45 million, with $11.35 million in federal funding. The GPA and the Corps of Engineers will collaborate on the project to outline state and federal responsibilities.

Governor Kemp praised the record funding for infrastructure projects like the Brunswick Harbor, emphasizing its importance in Georgia’s thriving economy.

The GPA is also investing over $260 million in infrastructure improvements at Brunswick, including on-dock warehousing, additional storage space for roll-on/roll-off cargo, and enhancements to Colonel’s Island’s ro/ro facility.

These upgrades will provide vehicle manufacturers with more storage flexibility during seasonal cycles, as motor carriers are the largest users of the port. The GPA has committed to investing over $4 billion in port improvements over the next decade to further enhance its facilities.
