“Frankfurt Airport’s Strategic CargoHub Masterplan Unveiled”
Fraport Strategic Development Plans for Frankfurt CargoHub
Airport operator Fraport is strategically preparing its Frankfurt hub to meet the growing demand in the air cargo industry. With global trade on the rise, the air cargo sector is expected to expand both globally and within Europe in the medium and long term. The Frankfurt CargoHub is projected to follow this market trend, with airfreight volumes forecasted to exceed three million metric tons by 2040, a 50% increase from the previous peak in 2021. The logistics sector is facing challenges related to altered goods flows, digitization, and sustainability.
Dr. Pierre Dominique Prümm, Executive Director for Aviation and Infrastructure at Fraport AG, stated that in response to the expected growth and changing requirements, now is the ideal time for a comprehensive innovation and investment package. The CargoHub Masterplan aims to position the Frankfurt CargoHub for the future, contributing to economic growth in the state of Hesse and Europe as a whole.
The masterplan rests on three pillars: digitization and process innovation, space optimization, and space development. Fraport aims to enhance efficiency through comprehensive digitized processes and facilitate seamless logistics with the Cargo Community System. They plan to free up additional cargo space by redesigning areas within CargoCity South and developing a new LogisticsHub West on the airport’s western flank to meet the needs of cargo handling.
Max Philipp Conrady, SVP Cargo Development and Management at Fraport AG, emphasized the importance of developing plans in partnership with the Cargo Community to ensure sustainable growth. Lufthansa Cargo AG expressed support for the planned measures, highlighting the need for digitization and automation in the industry.
Fraport, in collaboration with the cargo community, aims to provide a full-service portfolio for secure and efficient cargo handling at Frankfurt Airport. The CargoHub masterplan is an integral part of the overall strategy “Fraport.2030.”
