“DP World & Rumo Partner to Build Bulk Terminal in Santos”
DP World, in collaboration with Brazilian railway operator Rumo, will construct a new dedicated dry bulk handling terminal in Santos, Brazil. This new facility will include two shiploaders and a continuous unloader, adjacent to DP World’s existing container facility in the port of Santos. The terminal will have the capacity to handle 12.5 million tonnes per year of grains and fertilisers.
The total investment for the construction of this state-of-the-art facility is estimated at BRL 2.5 billion (US$500 million), which will be funded through a combination of resources from Rumo, loans, and potential strategic partnerships. DP World has recently made investments to expand its container handling facilities at the port as well.
The new terminal will handle 9 million tonnes of grains and 3.5 million tonnes of fertilisers annually. The construction is expected to take 30 months, during which there will be no disruption to container handling operations. Under a 30-year agreement, DP World will provide the terminal area to Rumo and oversee its operations and port services.
The terminal will feature 21 new pieces of equipment, including conveyor systems for handling grain and fertilisers. Grains will be stored in vertical silos and loaded via shiploaders, while fertilisers will be unloaded using a continuous unloader and stored in a warehouse. The terminal will also have a dedicated railway loop for efficient handling.
Fabio Siccherino, CEO of DP World Santos, expressed excitement about the partnership with Rumo and the transformative nature of this project in enhancing trade capabilities and creating long-term value for customers and stakeholders in Brazil’s logistics sector.
