“DP World Introduces World’s First All-Electric Port Fleet”
PRESS RELEASE
London, United Kingdom, 22 April 2024: DP World is excited to announce the arrival of eight fully electric straddle carriers for its upcoming £350m fourth berth at London Gateway. This groundbreaking development will see the implementation of the first all-electric fleet at any port in the world, servicing the world’s first all-electric berth.
These state-of-the-art straddle carriers, each costing £12m and weighing 62 tonnes, only require a 45-minute charge to operate for up to four hours. Manufactured by Kalmar, these zero-emission machines represent a significant step towards DP World’s goal of electrifying its ports and terminals equipment globally by 2050.
Ahsan Agha, Vice President Port Operations at DP World London Gateway, expressed his excitement about the arrival of the electric straddle carriers, stating that this milestone follows the delivery of the two largest quay cranes in Europe earlier this year. Once operational, the new berth will ensure the future sustainability of DP World’s UK operations, allowing the servicing of the largest container ships and expanding the company’s reach into the supply chain.
The opening of the fourth berth marks a significant achievement in DP World’s sustainability goals, with both Southampton and London Gateway terminals now being fossil-diesel-free after transitioning to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). Recognized as the ‘Sustainability Company of the Year’ at Multimodal 2023, DP World is committed to becoming the most sustainable logistics business in the UK.
In addition to its operations in Southampton and London Gateway, DP World offers logistics, forwarding, and European transport services, all of which are seamlessly integrated into the company’s global network. With a presence in 78 countries, DP World plays a key role in handling 10% of world trade.
