“APM Terminals Electrifies Container Handling Fleet for Net-Zero by 2040”
APM Terminals and ENNA Logic Join Forces to Electrify Container Handling Equipment
In a joint venture between APM Terminals and ENNA Logic, Rijeka Gateway is set to revolutionize container handling operations with over 60 pieces of electric equipment. This includes ship-to-shore cranes, rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and vehicles, marking a significant milestone in APM Terminals’ journey towards achieving Net-Zero by 2040.
Scheduled to commence operations in 2025 with an initial annual capacity of 650,000 TEU (planned to reach 1,055,000 TEU in phases 1 and 2), Rijeka Gateway will prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility. The first batch of electric equipment is expected to arrive in July 2024, followed by employee training on implementing best practices.
“With an ambitious goal of reaching Net-Zero by 2040, APM Terminals is committed to reducing energy consumption, shifting to battery-electric equipment, and utilizing renewable energy sources,” explains Sahar Rashidbeigi, Head of Decarbonisation at APM Terminals. The investment in Rijeka Gateway represents a crucial step towards achieving this goal, complementing ongoing pilot projects worldwide.
Recognizing the importance of electrification in container terminals, APM Terminals and DP World recently launched the Zero Emission Ports Alliance (ZEPA) at COP28. Through industry collaboration and research, ZEPA aims to accelerate the adoption of battery-electric equipment and create a more sustainable future for the shipping industry.
As APM Terminals continues to explore electrification solutions in various locations, including Aqaba, Pier 400, Mobile, Barcelona, and SCCT, the industry alliance formed with DP World signifies a pivotal moment in the transition towards zero-emission fleets. By investing in electric assets and embracing innovative technologies, Rijeka Gateway sets a new standard for responsible container handling practices and environmental stewardship.
